11/27/2022 0 Comments The black mirror channel 4![]() The episode’s theme - of living in terror because of technology - plays out well enough, but as the kid’s assignments become more dangerous, you can’t help wondering why he doesn’t just say the hell with it: Post it, see if I care. “Shut Up and Dance” turns on the story of a teenage boy (Alex Lawther) who repairs to his bedroom for a little private time with his computer, only to find out that his solo flight has been filmed, and he is being blackmailed into performing a series of tasks to keep the video of his activities from being posted on the Internet. The episode is gripping, but afterward, you may find yourself asking why he didn’t just opt out when he could. He signs on to test games for a secretive company, but soon realizes that the games are more than he bargained for. He stops off in London, where he finds he has to make some money in order to get a ticket back to the States. Wyatt Russell stars as a young guy who’s been traveling around the world avoiding calling his mother. Yorkie and Kelly seem like just another pair of ships passing in a nightclub, until our assumptions about who they are, and what the town of San Junipero is, are shattered.Įven the two weaker episodes are at least very solid, if not stellar. Lucie Pound seems like just another smartphone addict until we realize the implication of an entire society operating on a class system determined by ratings. We start out on solid, even familiar ground, but then the perception of reality begins to shift. ![]() But that’s how all six episodes are structured, more or less. In fact, it almost seems predictable at first. Nothing all that unsettling about that kind of a story line. Love or something like it blooms, but then Kelly disappears. “San Junipero” focuses on a shy young woman named Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) who meets the flashy, outgoing bisexual Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) at a club in the 1980s. There’s a futuristic “Stepford”-like aura to the episode, which beams with pastel settings and costumes and false pleasantries between people who barely raise their eyes from their phones. But a series of accidents and missteps throws Lacie off her game, and her numbers take a “Nosedive.” Can she recover? Or more to the point, should she? Through near-obsessive attention, she manages to get close to an optimum rating, which is why she’s been asked by her childhood friend Naomie (Alice Eve) to be maid of honor at her forthcoming wedding. Lacie Pound (Howard) is desperate to increase her approval rating, which will open all kinds of doors for her in work and life. ![]()
